Pick Up Stitches

Charities

Pick up stitches: to create a new row of live stitches at the edge of a row of established knitting.

It’s the nature of this craft to give it away. Few knitters can wear all they produce. Giving something hand-knit to an unsuspecting recipient is a thrill. Many knitters have an organization they are passionate about and knit for all year long. There are so many worthy causes; sometimes it’s impossible to choose. Yet I have found there is usually a group that touches a person’s heart, and they pour their efforts into that cause. Maybe you have a son or daughter in the military, and knitting for our troops appeals to you. Or you knit a prayer shawl for a loved one and found such benefit that you wanted to make shawls for others as well. Possibly knitting for children is a passion, so a children’s charity gets all your attention.

If you’ve not tried knitting for an organization, maybe it’s time for you to pick up some stitches for charity. Choices of charity projects range from head to toe. I’ve collected a few to highlight. A search on the web will show you many more to choose from. The story behind the charity is often quite interesting. It is no surprise to learn that many of them started as tiny grassroots efforts and grew to national, even international, proportions with thousands of knitters participating. I certainly hope you find an outlet here for the love waiting to flow from your needles.
